Create random geometric patterns (cycloids) on a 3D printed CoreXY style pen plotter.
This is an update to my Etch A Sketch. This was one of my favorite projects, but unfortunately the strings keep breaking inside the Etch A Sketch and they are not easily repairable.
Mechanical drawing machines have been around for a while. Early versions included the Marvelous Wondergraph, Hoot Nanny, and the popular Spirograph. Newer versions from Joe Freedman can be found at his website LEAFPDX. The Cycloid Pro is on my xmas list (hint, hint). KrazyDad created a nice online version that you can play with. It is located here.
The Arduino program will simulate a drawing machine. It will place random gears and connecting arms around the drawing area. But, instead of turning the paper, all of the gears and arms will rotate around.
I designed this around a dry erase board so you can simply wipe it clean when you are done. You can also draw on paper by attaching it to the dry erase board with magnets. The drawing area is 356mm x 445mm (14" x 17-1/2"), but it can easily be scaled to any size you like. I have included 3 different designs for the pen holder (with a servo lift, without a lift, and angled down for a wall mount).
NOTES:
- Build this at your own risk. Stepper motors can get very hot if not sized / setup properly. I am not responsible if it doesn't work, burns down your house, or writes a "your momma's so fat" joke on the screen.
- The pictures included have been curated. You will not always get a masterpiece. A lot will be very simple or downright "fugly". But, every once in a while, you will get one that makes you go "wow".
